How to Plan the Perfect Weekend Getaway

While there’s really nothing better than a nice, long vacation, most of us don’t get the luxury of travelling the world for weeks at a time.

Instead, we’ve come to love the weekend getaway. I know I do.

Packing a small bag and getting out of town for a couple of days can be a great way to reconnect with old friends, reignite the spark of romance with your significant other, bond with your children, or embrace your sense of adventure, but it also comes with a lot of pressure.

After all, travelling for two or three days doesn’t give you a ton of time – and it certainly doesn’t leave much room for error in your trip.

Fortunately, planning a weekend getaway you won’t soon forget doesn’t have to be difficult. If you’re ready to plan the perfect weekend getaway, consider these tips to make it happen:

Determine the Purpose of your Trip

Sit down and really think about it for a minute.

Why are you dying to get away? Does work have you absolutely frazzled? Do you need some time to reconnect with your spouse, or is your family the source of stress you’re trying to escape?

Are you just itching for a change of scenery and a chance to experience something new for once?

It can be easy to say you’re simply itching to travel and book the cheapest flight somewhere for a couple of days, but choosing a destination without considering how it’ll meet your needs isn’t the best way to set yourself up for success.

Knowing what you want to get out of your trip – and why you’re going on it in the first place – will give you direction as you make your plans and help you truly enjoy your weekend getaway.

Understand your Budget

Aside from what you’re ultimately trying to get out of your perfect weekend getaway, you’ll also need to consider your budget as you plan.

If you’ve got plenty of cash to spare, or you’ve saved up for your trip, it might make sense to book a quick flight, rent a car, and check into a swanky hotel room.

But if the thought of spending lots of money will cause more stress than your weekend getaway will alleviate, you can always keep things affordable.

You might be surprised to see how many interesting destinations you can reach by driving a couple of hours, and with a bit of shopping around, you can find deals on hotel rooms and other ways to keep costs low.

Apart from what you’re ultimately trying to get out of your trip, you’ll also need to consider your budget as you plan.

Pack Lightly

You’re packing for a perfect weekend getaway – not a trip around the world.

Don’t burden yourself unnecessarily with lots of things you won’t need. Instead, take a conservative approach to packing and limit yourself to the outfits, toiletries, and other essentials you can’t do without.

Don’t Over Plan your Perfect Weekend Getaway

There’s only so much time in the day, and when you’re visiting your destination for a weekend, you have to accept the fact that you won’t be able to see and do everything.

Instead, try not to commit to more than a couple of activities or attractions each day. This is exactly how I do my quick weekend trips.

Give yourself time to explore – you’ll find other things you want to do while you’re there, and you’ll be glad you could take advantage of them.
